Kyoto

Kyoto is very different to Osaka (which is kind of like Blade Runner). More on that later, maybe.

Dinner was grill-it-yourself Okonomiyaki!

The main gate to Ninomaru Palace, Nijo Castle. This palace has awesome Nightingale floors that chirp as you move across them. There's a sliding panel in each chamber that the shogun's bodyguards would wait behind.

Inside the castle (there isn't a keep).

Yasaka Shrine.

Same area as the previous photo.

Nearby cemetery. The crows (flying between trees) added a nice touch with their gargling caws.

Ryozen Kwannon, 'a monument to Japanese who died in World War 2 and a peaceful Japan thereafter'.

You can walk inside the giant Buddha. Inside are more Buddhas! One for each sign of the Chinese Zodiac (I'm a Rat).

There's a monument to the unknown soldier here too. Inside is a cabinet (which you can search on request, I think) with the names of over 48'000 Allied soldiers who died on Japanese-held territory. There's also soil from many of the Allied countries, but not New Zealand!?

MORTAL KOMBAT was required to move along this street. It lead to the next temple and is lined with tourist shops. Very nice though. Lots of semi-hidden gardens between buildings.

David in my otherwise good photo.

(A part of) Kyoto.

Wisdom, Happiness and Long-life. Drink two (you don't get told which ones they are, of course).

Blown-out unfortunately.

These are the support beams of Kiyomizu Temple. (Worth reading the Wikipedia page. I was a bit templed-out by this point and didn't take any proper photos.)

Jump off and survive to get your wish.
